Recruiting Reel Reality Check
Coaches have HUNDREDS of Reels to watch. You need to avoid giving them any reason to stop watching yours.
The following guidance has been provided by college coaches across the country
Assume the coach DOES NOT know who your are.
If the athlete is not highlighted or marked visually within the video, the coach may stop watching. Coaches work hard enough, don’t make them work to find you
Poor video quality and/or poor production quality can make it difficult for coaches to evaluate your skills and may cause them to skip your video. They have plenty of other reels to watch
Coaches will decide if they want to speak to the athlete within the first 10 clips. Your best highlight moments need to be at the front of your reel
Films should only be 10-20 clips, and 3-4 minutes in length at maximum. Only moms and dads will watch the back half of a video that is too long.
Reels do NOT need a 1 minute introduction resume or montage of photos. Coaches will visit your recruiting profile if they want more information.
Reels should contain more than just the moments you have the ball. Coaches want to see what you are doing before and after to understand your IQ and teamwork
Your reel MUST contain a variety of skills. If you show too much of the same thing a coach may stop watching or will evaluate you as a single skill athlete.
Use clips from MULTIPLE GAMES. You need to demonstrate your skills occur regularly against DIFFERENT competitors
You should NEVER SEND your entire video file to a coach. It will only clog their email or just never get sent. You should be using recruiting platforms that contain your profile and your highlight reels. Then send the coaches LINKS to that recruiting profile.
Do NOT UPDATE an existing reel with new clips. A coach will NOT re-watch a video to find your new stuff.
Instead you should produce a NEW REEL, which would give you a new reason to connect back with a coach.
Avoid highlight moments where you are playing against an obviously weaker opponent. Coaches want to see how you match up against the best competitors.

Coaches review hundreds of videos and have very limited time. If they cannot quickly and easily spot the athlete they are supposed to be evaluating, they may stop watching and move on to the next candidate
