Hype Reel vs. Highlight Reel

December 31, 2022

On the surface these two films may sound alike, but are fundementally different in their production style.

Hype reels have risen in popularity with the introduction of short form video sequences on tiktok and instagram (among others). These videos typically capture high energy sports highlights filmed from a fairly close perspective on the sidelines of a game. This type of film usually results in lots of camera action, moving back and forth between shooters and goals, very quickly, due to the fact they are shot in portrait mode intended for social media, and cannot fit the shooter and goal in the frame at the same time. Much of the hype reel style is achieved by the camera operator, and milage may vary depending on who is holding the camera.

Highlight films, in the traditional sense of the word, are typically comprised of actual game film that is filmed from a central elevated location and captures a much wider field of view. The source footage is typically used by the coach to review and analyze a team’s performance, therefore the focus is on the entire field of play rather than a single player or action. Players then use this game film to clip out their highlight moments to compile into a highlight reel to market themselves to colleges.

While Hype reels can be flashy and popular on socila media, our research has shown college coaches still prefer the traditional highlight film format since it is able to provide more context about a highlight moment by providing the wider field of view, showing the coach what occured before and after the play as well as where the highlighted player was in relation to the ball as well as the other teammates and opponents, both before and after the actual highlight moment.
